When Practitioners Have to become content creators

a q + a With tristan katz
tuesday aug 25th 11am aEST
When care becomes content - an open conversation about the stories and structures shaping how we're expected to show up online, and how we can shift the narrative.
Navigating the minefield that is the intersection between healing work, wellness culture and the online world is fucked.
These conflicts go beyond “what do I post?” (though that is definitely a part of it!), into the deeper struggles around feeling almost forced to speak about healing on platforms that reward fear-mongering, rage-bait, and overly simplified soundbytes.
Enter Tristan Katz.
Tristan (they/he) is a nationally recognised speaker, facilitator, and consultant with a lifelong commitment to human rights and justice.
Their work is rooted in an intersectional, anti-oppression, and trauma-informed lens, integrating decades of study in culturally competent marketing, business strategy, and LGBTQIA+ Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB).
Alongside their working in marketing and business ethics, they have a foot in the world of wellness, particularly yoga.
This makes Tristan perfectly positioned to talk about what happens at the crossroads of wellness, business, marketing, ethics and its relationship to the systems we live inside.
We all know the conventional way of doing marketing is counter-productive to the world we need to build in order for people to be healthy and well.
Yet we are all going along with it because we feel like we don't have a choice.
But we do.
IF YOU'VE BEEN …
Feeling like visibility comes at a cost you are not sure you can continue to pay
Wondering whether there is such a thing as success beyond being a slave to the algorithm
Concerned whether ethically aligned business and marketing can even exist inside capitalism
Frustrated at the fact that the only conversations we have around wellness and marketing refuse to interrogate the structures we live inside
Wanting to throw all the online things in the bin but can't because your business depends on it (and it eats you up inside)…
This is not a conversation that says “being online is bad!”
It is a conversation where we can acknowledge the mess, tension and complexity.
Where we can hold the both/and instead of choosing the “for or against"
Where we can speak about how we might show up in ways that support, rather than erode, our personal and collective wellbeing.

What can you expect?
This conversation is the first of a public series presented by The Root Network, in an attempt to have the hard, necessary, complex and perspective-shifting conversations the wellness industry refuses to have
Our afternoon with Tristan will be a Q & A - where you get to ask the questions. We like our conversations to be dynamic, multidirectional and emergent. Mycelial.
The session will be within the framework of of “The Politics of Online Visibility for Wellness Practitioners” - however, your questions can span any topic within that framework.
It can be from “I don’t know what to post” to “how do I make my work accessible” to “I hate Instagram but I feel like I have to be on it…help!”
The conversation will be facilitated by Root Network founder, Miriam Latif.
This is a collective meaning-making conversation, where everyone's questions and opinions are recognised and valued.

i'm not a wellness practitioner, can i still join?
Whilst the conversation will focus on the wrestle between speaking about ‘health’ on platforms that are fundamentally unwell, if you feel like you will gain from the conversation, you are welcome to join.
